Montevideo is the southernmost capital in the Americas. It is a very peaceful and quiet small city where main bureaus from Mercosur and ALADI are located. Montevideo is considered the fourth city in terms of security in South America as well as the one with the highest life quality within the Region. The city was once protected by walls and a large fortress. The western edge of the main square (Plaza Independencia) exhibits a well conserved former entrance to the colonial citadel. Montevideo also harbors one of the busiest ports in Southamerica. The renowned ”Rambla” borders many kilometers of Montevideo's beautiful Rio de la Plata seashore. In Montevideo you can also enjoy very good classical orchestras at the renovated Solis Theater (built in 1856) or opera at the Adela Reta Center. Tangos, the typical Uruguayan Candombe and famed folk music permanently dwells in the soul of the city. The first football World Cup was played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo in 1930.
